Samuel Y. Sim, principal of Chinese Gourmet Express, has been aptly described as a man of yesterday with a vision of a man of tomorrow. Chinese Gourmet Express started in 1990, Sam and Monica opened their first restaurant at the Sherman Oaks Galleria mall in southern California. To differentiate themselves from other Chinese food chains, they created a wide variety of authentic recipes from provinces throughout China. They also carefully planned the architecture, uniforms and signage to reflect a professional brand image.
It did not take the Chinese food aficionados of southern California to take notice of Chinese Gourmet Express. Sam and Monica created an affordable, fast Chinese restaurant with food so fresh and flavorful that it rivals those in expensive establishments
It also didn't take developers long to learn that Chinese Gourmet Express was something special. Soon after Sam opened in Sherman Oaks, leasing agents from malls across the country were knocking on his door to invite Chinese Gourmet Express into their food courts.
Fifteen years after they opened their first restaurant, Sam and Monica export their unique vision throughout California and the country in the Northwest, Rockies, Texas, Midwest and Northeast.
In 2002, Sam created a second Asian concept called Sansei Japanese Cuisine. The first location debuted in Northridge, California. The new location was such a huge hit that he began opening more stores in diverse markets across the country.
Chinese Gourmet Express is now the preferred Asian restaurant for shopping centers developers. Sansei is also an emerging concept, which is gaining steam on the rest of the Japanese quick-service segment.
